Things are ticking along nicely
Three weeks into term: students had returned, placements were up and running and things were generally ticking along...
However, the life of a Kings intern is never a quiet or a dull one. Andy Nunn rarely finds a week when he doesn’t get a divine appointment and a chance to share his faith (this time with a greengrocer) and Sarah wouldn’t be Sarah without organising a tug of war with a group of Primary school kids to demonstrate unfair trade (as part of her work with Traidcraft).
We had our second week of church history with Melody, this week stepping back in time to the Eastern Orthodox church- Jon led us in some pretty spectacular chanting and we got to eat taramasalata and pitta bread! We also learnt about the conversion of the Emperor and the effect on Christianity as well as how the Christians at the time were dealing with heresies that arose.
As student things began again we were thinking about politics at the Viaduct pastorate on Thursday and it was really powerful to see God move as he stirred students’ hearts to be praying for their leaders and the role of the church with the forthcoming elections.
The Sun was shining (ish) on Friday morning as we headed into town to sing in the market square- performing the now nearly perfected ‘France set-list.’ And the scaffolding that sprawled from the centre worked to our advantage as members of the public had little choice but to walk past where we were standing and to hear our melodic tones.  It went really well and we even had some of the girls from the sixth-form college come and join in with us, apparently the evidence of this is now somewhere on youtube if you have the time to hunt it out...
Bank holiday weekend arrived and with it many adventures ensued. On Saturday, one of us (can’t remember who- might have been me) was celebrating their birthday so we all trundled off to Alnwick for the day and had lunch in the Treehouse Restaurant. With 13 of us (there were a few hangers on too!) sitting around in massive wooden chairs, it did feel a bit like the council of Elrond, but this could only be a good thing. We then headed off to climb trees and walls and play in bogs- my idea of a really good time! And Jon was very happy when we fell upon a huge second hand bookshop.
Sunday saw the Crux and Connecting services kicking off for the term, beginning our new series on the Resurrection and 1 Peter respectively. And then Monday (Bank Holiday- we weren’t skiving!) brought with it another day of adventures, this time in Hamsterley Forest for the church picnic. A nature walk, crocker, a rope swing, frisbee and food ensured that there was something for everyone. And a bit of drizzle has never been enough to scare off the hardy folk from Kings Church Durham.
On Tuesday, we continued looking at Revelation with Mark and then we had the first team meeting of the term when we were all actually in the same place at the same time so it was good to catch-up and pray for each other and the busy term ahead. Jo also had a great time with the music group in prison and they were able to do some recording which is very cool.
Also, the school CU’s are going really well. Just today (Wed) at the Johnson, the kids were amazed by the feeding of the 5000 and at the High School, it was a small group but the girls wrote their own really beautiful Psalms to God.
So it’s been a week of much hilarity and fun but also of God really working too. So, lots to be thankful for.
A few prayer points:
- For good sleep and energy as some people are feeling quite run down at this point
- For Friday as we go back to Gilesgate and Newton Hall estates for outreach- first time this term.
- For those of us who are unsure what we’re doing next year- wisdom and guidance.
- For students and all of us to have a good perspective on this term and everything that’s coming up in it.
Thanks! God bless, Jenny
