April Showers Bring May Flowers

It feels like hardly any time at all since I last wrote the intern log – the weeks are well and truly flying by! Here’s what we’ve been up to recently….

On Friday night Gus and I helped at Youth Café where lighter evenings allowed us to venture outside and put our football skills to the test. The girls challenged the boys to a match, put up a great fight, but sadly lost 13-2 with twice the number of players. Perhaps next time we’ll play netball.

The weekend was a chance to relax, begin theology assignments, commence job applications and catch up with friends. On Sunday Wes continued our morning series on Ezra whilst Pete and Tim preached on Revelation in the evening. During the afternoon we made the most of a few hours of sunshine and enjoyed the first (of hopefully many) picnics down by the river.

As I’m sure you’re all aware, last Monday was a bank holiday, meaning that on the whole placements weren’t on. A number of us therefore seized the opportunity to get out of Durham for a day, choosing to visit High Force waterfall near Raby Castle. It was a lovely day and a great chance to catch up with people and get some fresh air. Unfortunately the day was cut a little short thanks to our ever so reliable British weather.

On Tuesday we continued to reflect on Basilea Schlink’s book ‘Those who love him’ in team meeting. Rather than discussing the 2nd chapter in groups, we went around the room and shared points that had struck or inspired us individually. It was great to hear what other people had drawn out of the chapter and how they understood it within our context.

Throughout the week placements have continued as usual and everyone is continuing to feedback positive reports. The Christian union meetings at the High School and Durham Johnston are continuing to go well. Tim and I are continuing to explore ‘Superheroes of the Old Testament,’ making top trump cards for the characters as we go. Fay reports that the older Cu is also going well and that this term they are looking at the psalms together.

Thursday saw the return of School of Theology which was kicked off by a puritan-style service led by Melody with Tim’s musical assistance. Ruth then led us in pastoral studies where we looked at the issue of bereavement from a biblical perspective. This was unsurprisingly a sensitive subject for many of us, but nonetheless a valuable and important session. Somewhat appropriately, Mark then rounded up the day with 2 hours of the resurrection and life after death. It was a tiring, full on day but another great School of Theology day!

For Friday morning outreach we split into two teams. The Newton Hall team focused on flyering for the upcoming June Project whilst the rest of us stayed in Durham City centre. Fay and I prepared and painted a large board with a skyline of Durham which will be used as a prayer board in a future week. The remaining interns did Soularium, a first contact method that uses a series of pictures to help people consider questions of faith.

All in all it’s been another busy, challenging and exciting week in intern land! As ever, we’d love you to pray for us and for the life and work of the church. Here are some prayer pointers:

  • Please pray for the students, most of whom are beginning exams this coming week. Pray for peace and a good approach to work.
  • Please continue to pray for June Project preparations. Pray for all those who have signed up, that they would be placed in the right teams and that God would fuel us all with a real passion for seeing Him move in Durham
  • Please pray for Mel who is coming to visit in a couple of weeks. Please pray that she would have enough energy before she comes and whilst she is here.
