Proposed Community Garden on Lawson Terrace
The ‘Lawson Terrace Community Garden’ is at the end of traditional 19th century terraced housing in the middle of a conservation area in the heart of Durham. The land has been used by generations of local children and has been established as a community garden for the last three years.
Funding is being sought to make this community garden safer and more accessible. The site has been managed by local community volunteers, who want the space to be a public amenity for local people. A proposal has been drawn up by a local architect to ensure that the garden provides a peaceful and safe environment for the local community. The project will also help preserve and protect inner city green spaces from commercial development and neglect.
Durham City Council, The Crossgate Village Community Group and The Kings Church Durham are partnering the project to empower local people to work together to ensure a lasting legacy of community space within the city.
